The High Fens (Hoge Venen) is a huge nature reserve in the Ardennes that you can explore by bicycle or on foot.

The High Fens spread into Germany but are largely in the Belgian Ardennes. Most of the landscape is shaped by bogs and woods. A lot of rare heather and peat plants grow here. This expansive area is perfectly suited for walking and cycling.

Before you go out into the nature, you should plan some time to visit Namur. This is where the Sambre and the Meuse conjoin. A tour on the Meuse is a great way of seeing the city. When you've seen the city, head out into nature. Admire the gorgeous stalagmites and stalactites in the Caves of Remouchamps. You can tour the caves on foot or by boat on the underground river, an adventure that children also love. Not far from Liège, you’ll find Lake Robertville and the impressive dam. You can also go for a lovely walk in the woods. You should also plan some time for the coal mine in Blegny. There’s so much to do and see in this unique underground environment that a few hours simply aren't enough.

The High Fens are easy to reach by car and public transport. If you plan on staying in a bigger city, you can travel to the region by train, but if you want to cycle and walk in different places, it's best to travel to the smaller towns by (rental) car.
