Historic Toll House in a prime spot near the CBD

Summary:
Embrace Hobart’s colonial heritage in this architecturally reimagined c1850 residence that originally functioned as a toll house on the north road out of Hobart. Fusing modern luxury with a cosy cottage ambience, it features two separate living spaces, stylish modern finishes and furnishings plus a covered deck, central courtyard and rear lawn with a majestic pine tree. Only 3km from Hobart’s CBD, it is a short stroll to parks and the riverfront and a walk to North Hobart’s trendy cuisine scene.

The Space:
A landmark residence defined by its alluring gabled weatherboard facade dressed with elaborate original timber detailing, it was built in 1850 as the toll house for one of only two roads leading north from Hobart. Ruben Joseph, a tailor sent to Van Diemen’s Land as a convict for receiving stolen goods, was awarded a tender to operate the toll house. Known as a local character, his enterprises included issuing his own trade tokens to travellers passing through his gates.

Architecturally remastered and beautifully furnished, it showcases an extensive open floor living room and adjoining dining room with a six-seat table setting plus a stylish open plan kitchen with timber benchtops and breakfast bar, gas cooker and dishwasher. Graced with high ceilings, leadlight windows and original timber flooring, it comes complete with a separate media room with a flat screen TV, spacious bedrooms that open to leafy balconies and the rear garden, two modern bathrooms, fully-equipped internal laundry, plenty of storage and off-street parking.

Nestled amid private landscaped gardens with child-friendly rear lawn and a swing dangling from a towering pine tree, it features an entertainers’ courtyard with an outdoor table and six seats all bathed in northerly sunshine overlooked by a covered rear deck accessed from the living area.

The house is professionally cleaned after each guest vacates and all the sheets, bedding and towels are provided by a contract linen supplier.

Guest Access:
You will be provided with details the day prior to your stay.

The Neighborhood:
Placed near the northern end of picturesque parklands forming Queens Domain just 3km from Hobart’s CBD, it is only a 10 minute stroll to the Derwent River, Cornelian Bay waterfront walks and the Intercity Cycleway that links with MONA.

There’s a bus at the doorstep that meanders into the Hobart CBD and Swanston Street Playground is only 250m down the road. Newtown Plaza, for all your shopping needs, is only 650m away, the renowned New Town Hill Street Grocer with its fresh produce and gourmet local delights is a 12 minute wander down the road and North Hobart’s cosmopolitan hotpot of eateries are just over a 15 minute stroll from the doorstep.

If you’re into biking, you can pop next door and explore the picturesque Queens Domain Park or jump on the nearby Intercity Cycle Way that links Hobart CBD (3km’s away) to MONA (11km up the river). If you have a car, its only five minutes from the CBD where parking is a breeze. From there, everything from and Constitution Dock and the ferry to Mona to historical buildings and Salamanca Markets with vibrant bars, brasseries and fine-dining venues are only a short stroll away.

While you’re behind the wheel, Mount Wellington is only a short drive away, it’s where the wilderness meets the city and where the best views over the Derwent and Hobart take centre-stage.

Hobart Stay
Only four towels supplied for 7 guests, had to go and buy 4 towels. Not enough kitchen equipment ( spatula etc). Mouse ran across the floor. Light bulbs out in two rooms. No BBQ. Linen was clean and fresh, glasses clean but not up to Stayz standard and garden untidy and house a little tired.

Extended family stay in New Town
The toll house was a nice fit for the 5 night stay of our extended family. Separate bedroom wings and bathrooms worked well for us. A few things not working hence a 4 out of 5 rating (eg lights in bathroom, lights in hallways, limited oven space for the cooking of a 7 person meal).

High quality accommodation in easy reach of Hobart city
Very comfortable stay, top quality appliances throughout the house, loved the fully equipped kitchen. We had everything (and more) that we needed for a week long stay. Location is great - a quick Uber ride or bus ride to the city centre. Supermarket a quick walk away. Highly recommend this property for groups as house provides lots of bedding options and extra living areas.
