The Space:
A landmark residence defined by its alluring gabled weatherboard facade dressed with elaborate original timber detailing, it was built in 1850 as the toll house for one of only two roads leading north from Hobart. Ruben Joseph, a tailor sent to Van Diemen’s Land as a convict for receiving stolen goods, was awarded a tender to operate the toll house. Known as a local character, his enterprises included issuing his own trade tokens to travellers passing through his gates.
Architecturally remastered and beautifully furnished, it showcases an extensive open floor living room and adjoining dining room with a six-seat table setting plus a stylish open plan kitchen with timber benchtops and breakfast bar, gas cooker and dishwasher. Graced with high ceilings, leadlight windows and original timber flooring, it comes complete with a separate media room with a flat screen TV, spacious bedrooms that open to leafy balconies and the rear garden, two modern bathrooms, fully-equipped internal laundry, plenty of storage and off-street parking.
Nestled amid private landscaped gardens with child-friendly rear lawn and a swing dangling from a towering pine tree, it features an entertainers’ courtyard with an outdoor table and six seats all bathed in northerly sunshine overlooked by a covered rear deck accessed from the living area.
The house is professionally cleaned after each guest vacates and all the sheets, bedding and towels are provided by a contract linen supplier.
