Admire stunning views of the city and river from this giant rail bridge, also a cherished spot for couples to display their “love locks”.

The Hohenzollern Bridge is considered to be an essential part of Cologne because it connects the central station to a variety of European cities on the other side of the Rhine. It is also known for its popularity as a charming spot for lovers to take a romantic stroll. Beautiful views of the city and river can be found atop this 409-metre bridge.

Traditionally the practice of chaining engraved "love lock" padlocks to bridges originated in Italy in 2007 but has since spread to a multitude of cities around the world. A padlock is inscribed with initials or a significant message and then locked onto the railings between the footpath and the tracks. The key is then dropped into the river.

This is said to be a symbolic gesture of true love for a couple forever united. Whether you are a dreamer or a sceptic, it makes for an interesting walk perusing the messages of love, hope and sometimes sadness engraved into the locks. Why not give it a go? You can get your lock engraved in town and affix it to the bridge as a symbolic gesture to your loved one.

Unsurprisingly this was not the main purpose of the Hohenzollern Bridge. Built in 1911 the bridge was dedicated to the powerful Hohenzollern dynasty who ruled over Germany until they were forced down in the 1918 revolution.

The bridge also had a pivotal role to play for transport during World War II. In spite of continuous air strikes it was barely damaged. Eventually the German military blew up the bridge itself, in a desperate bid to stop the advancement of Allied troops into Cologne in 1945. After the war ceased, the bridge was rebuilt and in use again by 1948, however just by trains and pedestrians this time.

Now more than 1,200 trains cross the Hohenzollern Bridge daily. Head towards the end of the bridge furthest away from the Cologne Cathedral and drink in the spectacular views from this superb vantage point.

To get to the Hohenzollern Bridge, follow the footpath from behind Cologne Cathedral. It is also only a quick walk from the Dom/Hauptbahnhof U-Bahn station. Hohenzollern Bridge is always open and is free to cross.
