Caribou Meadows by Historic Kilcher Family Homestead in Alaska The Last Frontier

Caribou Meadows is in a beautifully private but accessible setting, it has new and antique furniture throughout, along with full furnishings to make your visit enjoyable and rewarding. Both the main bathroom and master bathroom have been completely retiled and remodelled with Caribou motif, while maintaining original post and beam style. The well system has been improved with a two filter system and is fresh and pure. This cabin is immediately adjacent to the owners family homestead (the Kilcher homestead). It was hand built on the site of one of Homer’s original homesteads, by a young woodsman as he was starting a family in Homer. His craftsmanship shows in the original wood structure details throughout the house. With three bedrooms, a sleeping loft to allow for larger parties, two bathrooms, and a modern kitchen, but with more than a trace of Old World and homestead styling, this is a unique and memorable vacation spot. The wildlife in the immediate area is abundant, with moose, eagles, sandhill cranes, porcupines and many others. The cabin is sited in a beautiful meadow, surrounded by forest with room to roam. From the cabin, you can see beautiful Kachemak Bay and the mountains across the way.
The cabin provides modern amenities, has ample space and is a beautiful spot for a family to stretch out and use as a base of operations to explore both near and far. This cabin sits alone on a 10 acre plot 11 miles out East End road but has ready access and is close to the amenities at Fritz Creek (mail, gas, groceries, world-class restaurant and wines and spirits). In the area and beautiful town of Homer is halibut and salmon fishing, the Pratt Museum, galleries, restaurants, groceries, horse back and ATV tours, kayaking, glacier and bear viewing, air tours and much, much more.
It is also within walking distance of a historic site of rich significance, where I grew up with my father, an early Alaskan State Senator and mother a writer, singer and poet and my siblings, in the austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin - the Kilcher Homestead. Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres in which to hike through to the beach via one of only three beach access sites outside of Homer.

Homer House
We had a great stay. The property was farther from the Homer Spit than we would have prefered but that was not a huge issue. We enjoyed the privacy and the wildlife.

Beautiful cabin with great views
This cabin had great views, and plenty of room for the whole family. Catkin came by and introduced herself, and answered any questions we had about the property. Overall, a wonderful stay. Highly recommended.

Peaceful
We really enjoyed our stay at Caribou Meadows. This is a great spot if you're looking for something a little more remote yet still an easy drive into town and the spit. All the basics were provided making it "move in ready" and felt just like home. Great views with a nice hike down to the beach. Catkin was very responsive and quick to address any questions during our stay.

Fabulous Stay in Fritz Creek
We couldn't have been happier with our stay at Caribou Meadows. The home was spacious, comfortable, well equipped, extremely private and quiet, and really felt like being in Alaska. Moose wandered through our yard on multiple mornings and evenings and Sand Hill Cranes visited us daily. It was the perfect place for our family while we spent time in Homer and the surrounding area. Would highly recommend to friends and family! Hope to come back again someday.

Awesome
This is a must stay property. A moose walked across the yard to in any particular hurry. Also a porcupine graced us with their presence. Peaceful, tranquil and utterly impressive. Come and stay. You will not regret it.

Loved it!
This is a beautiful cabin! The deck was amazing and the views amazing. It was very clean and the furniture and decor were nice. Truly enjoyed our stay. Catkin was very nice and we enjoyed the tour of Yule Kilcher home. I would 100% recommend a stay here! The only thing to note would be that the bedroom with the twin bed is really small and if you are taller than 5 ft. or have any claustrophobia issues you might not want to sleep in there.

Great location. Very picturesque. Moose sightings in yard! Clean. A+
This cabin was well done, nicely furnished, clean, two bathrooms, accommodated seven of us very nicely. The setting has a secluded feel (about 10 miles outside of Homer), is very picturesque with hiking opportunities to the beach and surrounding area. Wish we would have had more time there to explore the surrounding area. We had two moose sightings in the yard. The last evening we were there, three moose in the yard at dusk. We had a very pleasant stay. Thank you Katkin.

Great time at Caribou Meadows
This is truly a unique and beautiful Alaska property. We loved hanging out in the backyard in the endless sun and eating breakfast at the great kitchen table watching for wildlife. We had 7 adults so one couple took the futon in the sitting area upstairs. Not ideal but we made it work! Catkin was extremely helpful and responsive to our needs. Would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful property, neat cabin
Overall positive experience, saw a moose in the yard, kitchen and laundry well stocked for a large party. A lot of small maintenance issues including the kitchen faucet leaking all over-let the owner know within ten minutes of our arrival but it wasn't fixed w no communication, DVD player didn't work-same story, no effort to fix. People working on roof while we were there (they were really nice). Overall a neat place but seems to need some additional maintenance.

Homestead
First, let's be clear that this rental is not in Homer, in fact it is 20-30 minutes past homer. We had several activities planned in homer and the drive back and forth was really aggravating. Second, the water is well water, which we have dealt with before but the sulfuric smell was so strong we considered paying for showers in town and brushed our teeth with bottled water. Third, the upstairs bathroom is cute, but has an angled roof that is too low for anyone over 5'6" and the mount for the shower head came out of the dry wall when we turned it on. Finally when my ten yr old used the key code to get into the storage shed for more toilet paper, the home owner freaked out on her. Apparently you are only allowed two rolls of toilet paper and one roll of paper towels regardless of how many guest are staying and no matter how long your stay is for, so you better bring your own supplies! With all that said, the property was remote, secluded and beautiful. I wish there was a bigger deck to enjoy it better. Also the upstairs of the cabin is really beautiful, the beds are comfortable, and I loved the antique furniture. My father in law had a chance to check out the museum and found it really interesting and the whole family enjoyed the video on the homestead.

Great home, private location
We really enjoyed our stay at Caribou Meadows. The home was roomy, with all the amenities for comfort. We especially enjoyed learning the Kilcher family history as early settlers of the region. We only wished we could have stayed longer in this great, peaceful setting.

Great Stay!
We spent 3 days at this beautiful, quiet property. We had everything we needed and a lot of outdoor space with a great view to enjoy. If we had to do it again, we would have made a day out of going down to the beach on the property. We used the fire pit every evening and had a moose and her calf join us the final evening and morning.

Peaceful and stunning views!
Beautiful home in tranquil location with stunning views. Nicely appointed with comfy beds. Greatly enjoyed the family of moose strolling through the backyard in the mornings! Hard to find though. At the end of the dirt road is a sign saying "Private road keep out" on a gate. No exactly welcoming. We had to call the owner who explained how to enter the premises. The other annoying thing is that we were expected to take our garbage to the local dump to dispose of. Not to mention we were asked to to start a load of laundry of towels and sheets. I get there are house rules, but why am I paying a fortune for cleaning when I did half the work?
