House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany

Follow a timeline of German history from 1945 until the present at this expansive modern museum with exclusive access to historical landmarks in Bonn.

The House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany (Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) showcases a unique insight into Germany’s history, from the middle of the 20th century to today. Its permanent collection houses an intriguing investigation into the two German sub-states, the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, as well as an insight into the country’s unity and its place in the globalized world.

Trace the course of history when you check out the museum’s chronologically organized permanent exhibition. More than 7,000 exhibits are spread across 43,000 square feet (4,000 square meters) of exhibition space. The exhibition begins with the end of World War II, when Germany split into two blocs. Learn about the divided nation, Cold War history and the identities of East and West Germany. Find out about the fight for reunification and see significant photographs, videos and relics from this momentous time.

Check out the permanent exhibition’s interactive terminals, which are dotted across the floor. These multimedia hubs show a different perspective of the historically significant events. Follow the exhibition into the present day, with highlights on Germany’s role in the wider world, the lives of everyday Germans and the migrants who enrich the multicultural identity of the country. Use the English-language audio-guides to get a deeper understanding of each exhibit.

You can also see archaeological treasures from the Roman cellar that was excavated during the museum’s construction. The intriguing museum’s park offers a snapshot of a typical post-war garden. Refresh yourself with a cup of coffee at the Museum Café.

Through the museum, book a tour of the magnificent modernist architecture of the Kanzlerbungalow (Chancellor’s Bungalow).

The House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany is situated on Bonn’s Museum Mile alongside the Rhine River. It is closed on Mondays, as well as several holidays. Visit the museum for free.
