Mallards is a comfortable holiday cottage and is part of a lovely range of converted, traditional, 17th-century chalk and flint barns, set in their own maintained grounds in Thornham on the North Norfolk Coast, an area noted for its natural beauty, wildlife, and relaxed atmosphere. Mallards sleeps 8 and there is also accommodation for an infant in the travel cot provided. The ground floor consists of a kitchen, lobby and large living room with exposed beams, wood effect floors, inglenook, and wood-burning stove (fuel available at the nearby deli/shop). Both bath/shower rooms are also equipped with heated towel rails. There is also a clothes horse on site for drying clothes outside in sunny weather.
Outside, the cottage has front and rear gardens. Sliding doors open onto the front lawned garden which catches the morning sun. To the rear, a standing barbecue is built into the wall of the yard, which catches the evening sun in spring and summer. Thornham is a charming, picturesque, and quiet village, close to the old harbour and sea, and is surrounded by open countryside. There are lovely ancient trackways and coastal walks along dunes and sweeping beaches, with bird watching available at nearby Titchwell, Redwell Marsh and Scolt Head nature reserves.
There are three traditional pub restaurants in the village which welcome children and serve excellent Norfolk food and real ale. Dogs are also welcome in the bar areas. The friendly village deli/shop provides for day-to-day needs of groceries, newspapers, etc, and there is also a cafe/bistro. A well-equipped play area is available near to the deli, which is a 2-minute walk from Mallards, off road and across a green. Major supermarkets and shopping are available a 15-minute drive away in nearby Hunstanton, a charming traditional seaside town with entertainment for adults and children, including beachfront amusements, fun fair, swimming pool, bowling alley, bandstand concerts on the green and a sea life centre.
Further afield there are many old villages and market towns to explore, such as Wells, Burnham Market, Holt and the birthplace of Nelson, Burnham Thorpe, where the parish church lectern is said to be made from timbers taken from his ship HMS Victory. Nearby stately homes with gardens are open to the public, such as Houghton, Holkham and the Queen’s country estate at Sandringham. Brancaster Staithe is nearby for dinghy sailing, sailboard hire (tuition available) and boat trips, including seal watching. Two local golf courses welcome visitors. Fresh fish and seafood are available in Brancaster.
