Cosy mountain barn conversion surrounded by lakes, forests and coastline

This peaceful and tranquil place nestled high up in the Connemara mountains is a perfect 'get away from it all' retreat. The barn is 8 miles up the mountain along a narrow and winding mountain road with spectacular views.

Snuggle into this beautiful and remote landscape in comfort with an open fire and a hot stew. This cosy barn is ideal for a couple wanting a few days of quiet time in the mountains.

The main cottage (also listed here) is also available if you need more space for a larger family or small group holiday.

The area is great for a walking or cycling break but also a the perfect base to explore the wonders of Connemara by car. A place to relax, to breathe fresh mountain air, and warm up by the fire after a day out.

The barn is situated on the very top of the mountain on the edge of a forest and is surrounded by a landscape of natural beauty. The picturesque village of Oughterard is on the bank of Loch Corrib and is eight miles in one direction and access to the Irish speaking coastal Aran Islands are ten miles in the other. The city of Galway is a mere forty five minute drive away but the place feels like it is out on the edge of the world.

The converted cattle-barn is situated on the grounds of the main turf-cutters cottage opposite (this is also listed here for rent).

The barn is an open plan conversion which has its own double height living space with wood stove, kitchenette and staircase leading to a cosy bed platform that sleeps two.

The small print...

Please bring what you need with you in terms of food and drink, and plan to shop when out for the day. The nearest shops are 8 miles down a winding single-lane mountain road.

There is no TV but a good internet service.

Water supply is direct from the mountain stream and filtered through the natural wild peat bog and has a brown tint like the local lakes and streams. It is beautifully soft to shower in. Locals tend to boil the water for tea and coffee and use bottled water for drinking. Please bring 5 litres of bottled drinking water with you when you come.

We can have the fire lit for you on arrival. Solid fuel for the fires is supplied.

Cooking is by bottled gas and will sometimes need replacing. Water filters also need attention from time to time. The neighbours Martina and Jack are available to help if you run into any problems.

I am delighted to welcome you all to this magical space where you can, if you wish, forget the troubles of the world outside for the duration of your stay.

The cabin was fantastic- had everything we needed for a 3 night/ 4 day stay. It is fairly remote so id say plan accordingly but thats what we loved about it! Ammenties in the cabin are great ( even used the dryer after a really nice day at the beach to quickly dry some bathing suits ) overall great, hoping to be back soon!!
