Delight in the colors and scents of a public garden that sits above two beaches. Enjoy the stellar views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Take in the beauty of the Jardines de Piquio as you stroll along its paths amid a variety of colorful and fragrant trees, flowers and plants. The coastal gardens are located on a rocky promontory between the first and second beaches of El Sardinero and offer fantastic views of the Bay of Biscay.

Wander through flower- and tree-lined alleys where you'll find eucalyptus, tamarinds and palm trees, among other species. This attractive park was created in 1925 as part of the development of the area and has been modified and added to over the years.

Study the public works of art. Look at the Bola del Mundo (Ball of the World), a 26-inch (65-centimeter) diameter limestone sphere that was carved in one piece and which represents the oceans and continents. Admire the circular stone La Mesa Zodiacal (Zodiacal Table), which has carved animal figures representing the 12 signs of the zodiac.

Walk under the pergola and then enjoy one of the principal attractions of the gardens, the views. Relax on one of the many benches and look out to sea. Among the sights you can see from the gardens are the Parque de Mataleñas, the Isla de Mouru and the Magdalena Peninsula. The Jardines de Piquio also make a nice spot to visit during the evening when the pergola is illuminated.

After your visit to the gardens follow the steps that lead down to the beach. Relax some more on the soft sands and cool off in the summer with a swim. Among the other attractions in the neighborhood are the Gran Casino del Sardinero and the Parque de Mesones, a green space that encompasses a man-made pond.

Make your way to the Jardines de Piquio by bus, taxi or car. Street parking can be difficult in the area especially during July and August but there are garages nearby where you can park for a fee.
