Lose track of time on this picturesque beach, where the waters are calm, the views are glorious and everything you could possibly need is close by.

Praia deJoão Fernandes, or João Fernandes Beach, is one of the best-loved stretches of sand in the resort town of Búzios. Choose your spot here on the golden sand beneath a brightly colored beach umbrella. Prepare for a day of basking in golden sunlight, swimming in clear blue waters and taking photo after photo.

João Fernandes Beach takes its name from a Portuguese explorer and merchant. Come here today and you will quickly see that this spot is now more popular with tourists than with sailors. Visit at the right time of day, though, and you may still glimpse fishermen heading out to sea, or returning with their hauls. This is an excellent place to catch Atlantic anchovies.

Rent a snorkeling mask or a kayak to make the most of the still waters here. The cove is popular with swimmers of all ages and abilities, as it is so safe. The waves are often so small they are hard to even see.

João Fernandes Beach is probably better served by facilities than any other beach on the peninsula. Stay in one of the luxury hotels close by to wake up to a stunning ocean view every day. When you are relaxing on the beach, fuel up with a snack from the area’s many kiosks and cafés, or take a break to have a meal at a restaurant.

Although João Fernandes Beach sits toward the tip of the peninsula, a little further north than some of the other popular beaches in Búzios, it is still very easy to get here from the town center. Set off on foot from the main street, Rua das Pedras, and arrive at the beach in around 25 minutes. Along the way, look for some of Búzios other well-known sights, such as the statue of Brigitte Bardot, the statue of three fishermen standing in the ocean and the very photogenic Mangue Pier.
