Constructed in 1911, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building began life as the Utah Hotel, and spent nearly eight decades in this guise. The name was then changed and the building renovated in honour of Joseph Smith Junior, the founder of the Latter-day Saint movement. It has become a popular venue for weddings and conferences since its reopening in 1993, and contains a number of excellent eateries. Furthermore, the building is also home to the FamilySearch centre, which helps people research their family line and history.
Take a break from your sightseeing around the historic Mormon buildings on Temple Square. Lunch and dinner are served at a number of restaurants, while morning appetites can be satisfied at the café or with a tasty treat from the on-site bakery.
Spend some time taking in the building's wonderful interior. Admire the ornate glass ceiling, imposing marble pillars and decorous staircase in the lobby. Luxurious carpets soften your footsteps, while crystal chandeliers cast patterns in light from above.
Volunteers will be happy to help you to research your lineage at FamilySearch on the fourth floor. While this service is especially aimed at adherents of the Mormon faith, it is open to all.
Two excellent restaurants share the top floor of the building. Savour a meal under the skies at the Garden Restaurant, whose retractable glass ceiling is open during the summer months, while taking in vistas over the Salt Lake Temple and Temple Square. The Roof Restaurant is an excellent choice for families with children, offering a top-quality, all-you-can-eat buffet.
The Joseph Smith Memorial Building is located in the centre of Salt Lake City. Parking is available on site for people using the building, which is closed on Sundays.
