A World War II survivor, this small parish church sits in the lap of a lush green countryside and overlooks Kvalsund’s fishing harbor.

Kvalsund Church (Kvalsund Kirke) is a pretty little parish church located in the village of Kvalsund. The wooden structure was built in 1936 and is the only building in Kvalsund municipality to have survived the German occupation of World War II. Today, it is an active place of worship and hosts Masses, choir recitals and workshops.

Stand outside the church and take a moment to appreciate the simple whitewashed building and the steeple above the entrance. During the summer months the building contrasts perfectly against a backdrop of blue skies and grass-covered mountain slopes. In winter, a blanket of snow makes it blend in with the snow-covered peaks. You can also stroll around the small cemetery.

Inside, the church is just as stark and unassuming. There are rows of wooden seats and plainly painted walls. Among the highlights are the wooden pulpit, organ pipes and the painting of the crucified Christ above the altar.

About half an hour should be enough time to see the church, admire its surroundings and take a few photos. Afterward, make the short walk to Kvalsund’s harbor. View the fishing boats and watch fishermen arrive with their day’s catch.

Just a 5-minute drive or a 30-minute walk from the church and harbor is Kvalsund Bridge. This 2,431-feet (741-meter) long structure is the world’s most northerly suspension bridge and connects Kvalsund with the island of Kvaløya. Walk across and enjoy views of the water and sprawling mountains.

With additional time you can continue across the bridge to Hammerfest, on the western shores of Kvaløya. This small village is a great place to witness the midnight sun and the northern lights, two spectacular natural phenomenon.

Kvalsund Church hosts a number of services throughout the week. A schedule of services is available on the church’s official website, which is in Norwegian only. If arriving by car, park for free near the church’s main entrance.
