The Lagos Zoo is a fun family attraction to complement the beaches and the historic center of Lagos. It comprises a scenic and spacious setting for a diverse array of animals and plants, with a focus on conservation, protection and education. Make your way through this large park to see some of its 120 animal species.
Inspect the great selection of plant life in the zoo, which has about 200 botanical species from five continents. Bring your children to the petting farm for them to feed the pigs and goats. The children will also enjoy frolicking in the playground.
Look up the feeding schedule to see when the meerkats and pelicans are due to eat. Admire the bright colors of the birds in the aviary. Among the highlights in the rest of the zoo are the pygmy hippos, penguins and primates of the Monkey Island section.
Browse the various handicrafts and souvenirs available at the zoo gift shop. Relax with casual food and drinks at the snack bar. Have a meal at the Restaurante O Cangalho, beside the zoo’s entrance. It has outdoor seating and a range of typical Portuguese dishes. If you wish, bring your own picnic to enjoy at one of the many tables dotted around the park.
There is a fee to enter the zoo, with discounts for seniors and children. Toddlers have free admission and family tickets are available. The zoo opens daily year-round from morning until late afternoon. In summer, it stays open a little later.
Find the Lagos Zoo in the heart of the peninsula that juts out from the southwestern end of Portugal. Drive northwest from the historic center of Lagos for around 10 miles (16 kilometers) to reach the zoo in about 20 minutes. In summer, you can also ride a shuttle bus from the Alma Café in Lagos to the zoo and back. Visit the nearby town of Barão de São João for its historic buildings and scenic park.
