Run by veterans, this museum has a personal touch with its range of photos, videos and uniforms that trace the history of modern wars and the soldiers fighting them.

Set up by a pair of World War II veterans, the Livingston County War Museum is an interactive space that looks at local war efforts. The exhibits cover the history of central Illinois’ military veterans, some of whom work as volunteers in the museum. Learn about the people and personal stories of those at the forefront of U.S. wars.

Arrive and ride the elevator up from the entrance to the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame & Museum. Go on a tour with one of the guides, who are usually former soldiers. Talk to them about their own experiences to really get a feel for what it was like to serve in the army.

Appearing to stand to attention upon your arrival are around 200 mannequins dressed in army uniforms. Inspect the cases that contain various weapons and examine the food ration items, radios and other military equipment.

A display of photos helps visitors to understand the realities of war. Watch footage from the World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War in the video kiosk. You’ll also find numerous statistics and maps piecing the conflicts together. Look at the many shadow box frames, which show off the awards, photos and other significant items of veterans.

The museum was set up in 2004 by veterans Neil Bach and Dal Estes. It is open Monday through Saturday from morning to late afternoon and Sundays from noon. Admission is free.

The Livingston County War Museum is located on the third floor of the old city hall building, right in the heart of Pontiac. Ride a bus to the stop just outside the building or drive and leave your car in the free spaces across the street.

Stay in the city center to see neighboring sites such as the Livingston County Courthouse, the Eagle Performing Arts & Conference Center and the Pontiac Oakland Auto Museum.
