Lopez Island is a beautiful island with many very friendly people. Most everyone waives at you as you drive past each other. Our rental was a nice, basic cabin. We rented for 7 days, and paid as stated. We then got a call from the owner asking us to check out a day earlier. She said she needed more time to clean for the next renter. Trying to be nice, we agreed. We were sent a revised billing showing an INCREASE in our rental rate so that the rent was the same, tax calculated on the artificially inflated rate, and the same fees. And a credit was made for less than 1/7th of what we had paid. We wrote to the owner thru VRBO and pointed out that we had expected a 1/7th reduction for helping her out. No reply.
As the date approached, we talked to her about how to check in. We were arriving just after dinner. She said that she would leave the front door unlocked, and the key on the kitchen table. When we arrived, the only door was locked. We couldn’t reach her because cell service was not available. We tried under plants, and mats. We were surprised that she needed more time to clean, as there were few surfaces in the cabin. She should have blocked off the day before the next renter, who was already scheduled when we made our reservation. There was a rules letter on the table with complaints from the previous renter. As that person stated, there are milk crates behind the main house, but no labels for what recycling to put in each. There is no closable gabage container, and animals had already strewn about garbage from the previous renter. The BBQ pictured is not there. Only 1/2 a roll of toilet paper was left for her. Thankfully, that renter had left 3 rolls for us. The kitchen wall, bathroom wall, wall above coffee maker, and dining area wall, near trash baskets, all had food or other splatter. We cleaned these, but weren’t happy about it. Someone had left a mouth guard in a drawer under the sink, that the cleaner missed. There were lots of towels, but no blankets, just a bedspread and 2 small throws. The heaters work very well. There were far more knives than needed, but the first one I grabbed was not clean. Of the 3 dinner plates, 2 were cracked and chipped. Two reading lights by the bed were nice, but one didn’t work, despite changing the light bulb. The “brand ne
