About 1 million visitors per year visit nature’s tribute to male fertility in the Love Valley. Its fairy chimneys differ from other examples in the region as they have a wide base, narrow pillar and cone-shaped peak. Millions of years of erosion from wind and rain along with volcanic eruptions formed the rock formations, which are considered both comical and beautiful. A hot air balloon over the extraordinary landscape is an unforgettable experience.
The valley is full of green vegetation, white hills and cliffs. Walk around the area with a tour group from your hotel or explore it on your own. Gaze up at the tall rock formations, which reach a height of 130 feet (39.6 meters). The valley’s erotic imagery can turn even the most prudent adults into giggling schoolchildren. Some take suggestive photos with the phallic fairy chimneys, although this is not advised.
Take part in the local practice of riding a hot air balloon over the intriguing landscape. Enjoy the aesthetic effect of the multi-colored balloons floating over the white and green terrain. See the long shadows gradually shrink in size as the sun rises in the morning.
Wear appropriate shoes for the hike and bring plenty of water. Despite the phallic symbolism, the walk itself is suitable for all the family, since it remains relatively flat. Follow the stream as it meanders around the fairy chimneys in the winter. It tends to dry up in the summer months.
Although better known as the Love Valley, as a euphemism for the erotic rock formations, its official name is Baglidere Valley.
The Love Valley is slightly north of Göreme in the heart of Cappadocia. It stands between the charming town and the Göreme Open Air Museum, which is home to fairy chimneys and dozens of carved churches. If you choose to drive, you’ll find plenty of space for parking.
