Visit this thundering waterfall in northern Norway to experience its rugged beauty and learn about its importance as a destination for salmon fishing.

Known by some as Norway’s national waterfall, Maalselvfossen is a cascading series of rapids that tumble from the Maalselv River near Andselv, Maalselv. Stroll through fragrant pine forests to reach this thundering waterfall and see one of Europe’s longest salmon ladders, a structure that aids the fish in swimming upstream. Known for its ample supply of salmon, Maalselvfossen is a great place to cast a fishing line and catch fresh fish.

After a short walk through the tranquil forest, you’ll reach the raging water’s edge. Survey the stunning scenery of this open expanse of river, where powerful surges of water churn over the rocks. You’ll find a specially constructed window that provides an insight into the river’s salmon ladder built in the early 1900s. The ladder stretches nearly 2,000 feet (600 meters) and provides resting places for the fish as they negotiate the rapids. Helping the fish upstream ensures the health of the river’s ecosystem.

Admire the stunning forest-fringed river and take a moment to enjoy the scenery. Set up your fishing reel and cast a line into the churning waters. This bend in the river has been renowned for its excellent salmon catch for generations. With any luck, you won’t be waiting long before you hook a fish.

Use the parking lot a short distance from the Maalselvfossen. Stroll from the large parking lot to the falls in less than 10 minutes. You’ll find fishing supply and tackle shops dotted throughout the nearby towns and hamlets. If you prefer fishing for trout or char, try your luck at Bardufossen. This pretty cascade is less than a 10-minute drive west of Maalselvfossen.

The Maalselvfossen is a pretty roadside attraction between Narvik and Storslett. It is close to the villages of Andselv and Bardufoss. The waterfall is free to visit at any time of the day. In winter a large part of the falls may freeze. Ensure you have paid the appropriate Norwegian fishing fees before casting a line.
