Maedler Passage

Wander through a glass-roofed arcade where high-end boutique shopping meets Leipzig’s literary and architectural heritage.

One of the bars in the Maedler Passage was reputedly frequented by Faust, who famously made a deal with the devil. Today, however, bargains of a different kind are sought in its many fashion and jewelry shops. The popular destination is a beautiful, multistoried arcade in the heart of Leipzig and offers hours of shopping in a historic venue. Even if you don’t want to spend, it’s still worth exploring the building if only to appreciate the elegant architecture.

Before entering, look for the statues of two women holding a vase and grapes on the spectacular sandstone façade. These symbolize the building’s original purpose as a wine bar and exhibition hall for porcelain. The bar was opened in 1525 and, after its initial success, was upgraded into a hall. The venue became internationally famous after it featured in Goethe’s Faust.

Walk along the length of the colonnade, which is 460-feet (140-meters) long, to experience its architectural beauty. Look for statues and murals depicting Faust’s infamous pact. The rotunda, a spacious area lit naturally by the sun streaming through the glass dome that covers the space, is particularly impressive. Listen for the hourly chimes of the porcelain glockenspiel.

Try on stylish clothing in one of the passage’s many upmarket fashion boutiques. Treat yourself to diamond-studded jewelry or take home a porcelain souvenir from a homeware shop. The arcade is spread over six levels, although the top three floors are occupied by offices.

After restocking your wardrobe, stop for a drink or dinner in the historic Auerbach’s Cellar. This institution harks back to the founding of the passage and serves modern spins on classic Saxon cuisine. Grab a coffee in Mephisto-Bar, where a painting of its namesake watches patrons from above.

The Maedler Passage is located in the heart of Leipzig, in between Leipzig University and St. Thomas Church. See the sights in this attraction-filled area on foot. To get here on public transport, take a tram to the church or university.
