Nestled amid the gorgeous countryside of Central Java and close to important Buddhist temples, the small city of Magelang is alive with cultural pursuits and outdoor adventures. Marvel at ancient Buddha statues, hike mountains and go rafting down a river.
Magelang benefits from its proximity to one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world. Drive south from the city for approximately 30 minutes to Borobudur Temple. This vast religious complex was built in the eighth and ninth centuries and lays claim to being the world's biggest Buddhist monument. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is decorated with more than 2,000 reliefs and hundreds of Buddha statues. It is part of a triad of temples that includes Candi Mendut and Pawon Temple. Both are located nearby.
Make time in your itinerary for more cultural pursuits. Examine modern and contemporary Indonesian art at the OHD Museum. Visit the Museum Monument of Prince Diponegoro in the former home of Prince Diponegoro, a national hero who died in the 19th century.

Hike along the Ketep Pass, a mountain pass between Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu. See the impressive Kedung Kayang Waterfall, which is located on Merapi's slopes. The city’s nightlife is low key, but there’s a good collection of restaurants. Sample local specialties, such as Gudeg, which is made with boiled jackfruit.
Reach Magelang’s temples, museums and scenic landscapes by flying into the international airport at Yogyakarta, approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of the city. Get around by buses, taxi, rental car or motorbike.
