Study the preserved medieval art hanging on the walls of the ornate nave and attend a concert of religious music in this inner-city highlight.

The Marienkirche is a historic church that blends majestic features from Gothic and Romanesque architecture. Dating back to the 12th century, the church has excellent acoustics and is often used as a recital hall for religious performances. Recognize this Dortmund cornerstone by its southwestern tower that rises above the surrounding buildings.

Notice the Gothic arched windows and the layers of the tower, with its gabled summit. A couple of cafés with outdoor tables stand beside the church, providing unobstructed views of its façade. Browse the various shops on the small rectangular plaza facing this religious building.

Go in through the main portal to find yourself in the three-aisled nave. Inspect some of the medieval art for which the church is known. One of the highlights is the St. Mary Altar that was crafted by local artist Conrad von Soest in 1420. Admire the Berswordt Altar that was created in 1385 and depicts the crucifixion of Christ. Get a closer look at the 13th-century wooden sculpture of the Enthroned Madonna. Explore the artworks, buttresses and tracery windows in the Gothic choir and the sacristy.

Note that the church was destroyed in World War II and later rebuilt according to its previous design. Building commenced on the initial incarnation in 1170 in the Romanesque style, before Gothic elements were added in later centuries.

Opening hours vary, although the church is generally accessible to the public Tuesday through Saturday in the afternoons. Join one of the services that take place on Sunday mornings.

Sitting beside St. Reinold’s Church and the Bläserbrunnen plaza, the Marienkirche is in Dortmund’s inner-city area. Arrive at the Reinoldikirche U-Bahn station or one of the nearby bus stops and walk south for a block to reach the church. You can also drive and leave your car in one of the spaces adjoining the church.

While in the center of the city, make sure to see other highlights near the Marienkirche, including the Museum Adlerturm, the Stadtgarten park and the Theater Dortmund.
