Matevulu Blue Hole is an idyllic lagoon of crystal clear water in the midst of jungle vines and tropical vegetation. It is among the largest of the iconic blue holes that decorate the exotic terrain of Vanuatu. Bring your kids to glide through the air and drop from a rope swing over this marvelous sapphire water.

Capture photos of the otherworldly glow of the bright, clear pool. The water is filtered through layers of limestone at the base of the hole, resulting in its intense blue color. Look down through the iridescent, transparent water and marvel at the visibility that almost reaches the 59-foot-deep (18-meter) bottom. The pool is 98 feet (30 meters) from one side to the other.

Swim with your family in the refreshing water, which can be a pleasant relief from the humid heat. See scuba divers swimming below the surface. Bring snorkeling gear for an even clearer view of the underwater world. Gaze up at the large banyan trees and hibiscus plants.

The pool area, which is rarely crowded, is serene and picturesque. However, you may wish to avoid cruise ship days, when most of the attractions in the region are busier. Bring food and lay down a blanket beside the pool for a picnic.

Let your kids play on the rope swing attached to one of the largest and oldest trees surrounding the pool. Climb the rickety ladder up the tree to reach the platform with the rope swing. A couple of lower rope platforms are also available.

Pay a small fee at the entrance to access the blue hole. Purchase snacks and refreshments from the charming hut near the pool.

Find the Matevulu Blue Hole near the eastern coast of the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu. Drive north from Luganville for 17 miles (27 kilometers) to get here. Decostop was perfect for our 12 day stay. The rooms are cozy but comfortable. It contained the amenities we needed. The staff was phenomenal and looked after all our needs. They were a joy to interact with daily. The view from the dining area became our favorite morning experience. The food was welll prepared. Kim the proprietor helped to arrange any excursion we needed help with. It was a great stay that we will always remember.
