Experience the life of 18th-century European aristocracy at the magnificent Meersburg New Palace, a fabulously ornate building that now contains a fascinating museum. Be sure to bring a camera to take plenty of photos of the building’s striking pink and white exterior and the wonderful views across Lake Constance, which it overlooks. Inside, walk high-ceilinged corridors and see priceless antiques up close.
Meersburg New Palace was built over 300 years ago, but has been updated many times since. Visit today and admire the beautiful pastel-colored façade, which was actually a later addition to the building. In the palace’s grounds, walk the same paths the Prince-Bishops of Constance walked centuries ago, when this was their residence.
Step through the grand doors of the building and enter a world of ornate beauty. Climb the sweeping staircase that is one of the most famous features of the house. This Baroque masterpiece was the work of architect Balthasar Neumann, who was behind several of Europe’s great 18th-century buildings. Neumann also designed the beautiful church that is attached to the palace.
Take your time exploring the rooms at the top of the stairs. Marvel at the decadent interiors furnished with antiques including items that belonged the royals who lived here. Take time to look at the many other pieces on display here too, beyond the usual objects expected in a home. These include taxidermy, musical instruments and much more. Linger on the palace terrace, where you will be able to see for miles on a clear day. This is a wonderful place to take photos of the lake below and the distant Alps.
The entrance fee for Meersburg New Palace includes a free audio guide to help you get to know this special building. Those who would prefer a guided tour led by an expert should book in advance. Afterward, stroll through the beautiful streets of Meersburg, which are lined with elaborate Gothic buildings and many other historic architectural treasures.
