A beautiful base for roaming the Scottish Borders.
Singles and couples alike will love this high-tech, eco-friendly home
Space, glorious space. It abounds not just within this former farm building — in its airy open-plan space, in the capacious bedroom and in its generous en-suite — but also outside, as a patio and broad lawned garden afford unfettered views of the distinctive Eildon Hills.
A great option for a couple or solo traveller, The Sheep Fold enjoys an elevated position above the pretty village of Gattonside — which, happily, boasts a very good restaurant in The Hoebridge. From the village, a chain bridge leads across the River Tweed to Melrose, in whose attractive town centre shops and pubs accompany one of the Scottish Borders’ captivating ruined abbeys.
Michael Vee Design is responsible for the home’s stylish interiors, while the owners must be credited with its impeccable design features. In its main open-plan living space, light floods in through vast, sliding glass doors to illuminate timber detailing, white walls, and abstract paintings. There’s plenty of seating, to one side here in the form of luxurious leather chairs surrounding a circular dining table, a squishy leather armchair, and a pair of sofas positioned to make the most of the stunning views over farmland and the triple-peaked Eildon Hills – one of Walter Scott’s favourite views.
To one side — The Sheep Fold occupies just one floor — is your large, softly-carpeted bedroom and its en-suite bathroom. The latter not only contains a generous walk-in shower with attractive tiles, but also an elevated bathtub beside a window facing the Eildons.
Underfloor heating throughout is a treat for toes. There are several eco-credentials that will impress here: a green, sedum roof; solar PV panels; and underfloor heating that is generated by an air-source heat pump.
The Sheep Fold is an ideal base for sightseeing — besides Melrose and more abbeys, you’re close to Sir Walter Scott’s old home Abbotsford and the Leaderfoot Viaduct — walking (the Southern Upland Way footpath passes right by here) or cycling, while anglers can tackle Middle Tweed or Teviot fishing beats.
Larger groups should note that The Sheep Fold sits just along from four other properties in the same ownership: Smiddy, Byre, Granary and Stables.
