Meurthe-et-Moselle is a picturesque region full of rivers, undulating green hills and Nancy, which is among France’s top culture spots. Many of the highlights lie in the city, known for it museums and art scene centered around its magnificent plaza and parks. Outside of the city, go fishing along the river or visit the vineyards and farms of the pleasant countryside.

The region experiences a semi-continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters.

When you arrive in Nancy, a great starting place and gathering point is the central Place StanislasOpens in a new window. See the elegant square in the evening, when its historic buildings are soaked in warm light. Marvel at the statue of the region’s former ruler, Stanislas. Jog through the Parc de la PépinièreOpens in a new window and take a break on the lawn with a picnic. See the small zoo and eat waffles from one of the stands. There are plenty of scenic spots outside the city. To the west, visit the St. Etienne Cathedral in Toul. It is a highlight of the region with its mesmerizing Gothic façade. To the north, spend some time in the charming Pont-a-Mousson to see the Premontres Abbey. Learn about the history of the Premontres religious order and enjoy the views of the river and gardens.

Make your way to the Lorraine Regional Natural Park, which has 510,000 acres (205,000 hectares) of unspoiled picturesque terrain. Hike along the paths and discover the various monuments and ancient ruins.

Stop off at one of the many ports along the rivers of the district. Admire the boats in the Richardmenil Yacht Harbor or Port Pleasance in Nancy.

Meurthe-et-Moselle lies in the Lorraine region in the northeast of France, near to the borders with Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany. The district has an international link via Metz-Nancy-Lorraine Airport, which is about 16 miles (26 kilometers) north of Metz. ParisOpens in a new window is 220 miles (354 kilometers) to the west.
