The wide open spaces and cooling breezes of Montjuïc offer a refreshing respite from the dust and heat of the city. This hilltop park overlooking the port of Barcelona is a favourite escape for locals and visitors alike, with miles of walking and cycling trails, various sports and cultural facilities and a historic monument to explore.
Montjuïc was the site of the 1929 World’s Fair and many of the buildings date from that time. The neo-Baroque Palau Nacional (National Palace) houses the National Art Museum of Catalonia, which boasts an impressive collection of artworks from the Renaissance to the 20th century. In front of the Palau is the ornate Magic Fountain, which after dark draws the crowds to watch its half-hourly music and light displays.
The neighbouring German Pavilion was designed by the world-famous architect Mies van der Rohe and is one of the most important architectural landmarks in the park. Poble Espanyol, the open-air museum nearby, is packed with craft shops and restaurants in the old Spanish style, where you can browse for souvenirs and enjoy some traditional local hospitality.
Montjuïc Castle takes you further back in antiquity. This 16th-century fortress occupies a prime position at the top of the hill and offers fantastic views of the city, the harbour and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea beyond. In summer the fortress is the atmospheric setting for open-air film shows.
The park’s superlative sports facilities were built for the 1992 Olympics, including the athletics stadium which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. Also dating from this prestigious global event is the eye-catching telecommunications tower designed by the celebrated Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava.
Montjuïc Park is always open, but individual attractions have various opening hours so check online before setting out. Admission to the park is free but there is a charge for some attractions. Take the metro or bus, or treat yourself to the cable car ride from Parallel metro station to the summit for fantastic views as you glide gently over the harbour.
