Housed within the Visconti Keep inside Brescia’s old defensive fortress, the Museo delle Armi Antiche, also known as Luigi Marzoli Arms Museum, holds a vast collection of military objects. Examine vintage weapons and arms dating from as far back as the 15th century as well as guns from the 17th and 18th century.
The museum enjoys a fitting setting in the keep of a castle complex that would once have served as the main defensive fortification for the city of Brescia. The museum’s location in Brescia is also fitting this city has a long history of weapon production, with the firearms giant Beretta having been headquartered here for more than 500 years. In addition to Beretta, many other gun manufacturers, including Perazzi and Pietta, are also based in the region.
Explore the impressive collection, which contains more than a hundred helmets, 90 guns, 15 cannons and 150 firearm accessories. The exhibits are showcased across 10 exhibition halls, with displays focusing on everything from the craft of making them to the evolution of weapons.
Follow the displays and notice how weaponry changes to meet the changing battle tactics. For instance, the protective armor becomes less clunky and more lightweight as speed and agility become more important. The objects also demonstrate the transition from cold weapons (traditional, non-explosive weapons) to guns and other firearms.
Among the many items on show are a few standout pieces. Look for the Maximilian-style armor which, despite weighing 175 pounds (80 kilograms), was considered lightweight for the time period. Ascend to the top floor to find valuable firearms made with valuable materials such as mother of pearl and ivory.
As you explore the museum, take some time to appreciate the fragments of frescoes visible on the walls. These date back to the Visconti era.
The Museo delle Armi Antiche is located within Brescia Castle and has an entry fee. The museum is open Friday through Sunday from mid-June to the end of September and from Thursday through Sunday from the beginning of October to mid-June. Opening hours change depending on the season, so check ahead before you go.
