Art and history come together in the Museu Puget, whose works of art line the walls of its glorious 15th-century villa. The museum showcases a comprehensive selection of pieces by a local father-and-son duo, from whom the museum takes its name. Check out the acclaimed collection by Ibizan Narcis Puget Vinas and his son Narcis Puget Riquer. These pieces give us an insight into the island in the 19th and early 20th centuries. See if you can recognize the streets of the Old Town quarter as they were decades ago.
Study the father’s 42 oil paintings on display, covering such themes as agriculture, religion and the role of women in the community. Look into the eyes of the figure in his self-portrait to try to fathom the man behind the work. In the artwork, he carries a stern regard, with a palette and paintbrushes in hand.
Similar themes appear in the son’s work, with reference to city life and the streets of Ibiza. Read the informational plaques next to the displays to garner a comprehensive understanding of the context behind his watercolor pieces. For a change of aesthetic, study the charcoal sketches and line drawings that were mostly used to prepare the other works.
The son began to master photography following an injury to his eye that restricted painting as his creative outlet. Admire the photographed landscapes of Santa Eulalia and inspect the cameras he used.
Enter the museum for free. It opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until afternoon.
The Museu Puget lies between the ramparts of the Old Town district in Ibiza. The nearest bus stop is a short walk northwest from the site. While you’re here, visit neighboring sights such as the Capella de Sant Chirac, the Casa de la Curia and the Ibiza Cathedral.
