The Moderna Museet, or Museum of Modern Art, houses over 130,000 works of art from contemporary Swedish artists and renowned European masters. The rotating collections include paintings, sculptures, photography and multimedia art.
Follow great art through time as you browse the museum. The exhibition of Early Modernism to the 1940s has work by Edvard Munch and Wassily Kandinsky. Then move to the Post-War Era to the 1970s for expressionism and pop art including Monogram from Robert Raushenberg and Apollo by Henri Matisse. Photographs from Barbara Kruger and sculptures by Eva Hesse are included in the Minimalism and Contemporary Art exhibition.
You’ll find frequent temporary exhibitions lasting a few days to several months. Salvador Dalí’s The Enigma of William Tell was a popular draw in the SuperSurrealists exhibit and may still be on display. Individual artists are featured in Moment displays.
One painting to look for is Le Jardin, a Henri Matisse work that was stolen in 1987 and recently recovered. Other works by Picasso and Georges Braque went missing in 1993 keep watch to see if they too have been returned.
Bring your children to the Family Sunday events. In these free sessions kids aged 2 through 14 will be taken on a guided tour of the exhibits by art educators. Then they’ll move into the museum’s workshop to become painters. While the children are being educated, visit the museum’s dining area. Malin Söderström, the Swedish celebrity chef, inspired the menu. From the restaurant, gaze across the water to Östermalm and Djurgården.
Walk to the museum from King’s Garden in 15 minutes or Central Station in 30 minutes. Although there is some pay-and-display parking outside the museum’s entrance on Skeppsholmen, it is limited. You’ll find public buses very convenient.
Visit Moderna Museet from Tuesday through Sunday, except holidays. Those under 18 can enter for free. Take advantage of the guided tours in English during the summer months or rent an audio guide. Check the official website for current information on exhibits and opening times.
