National Congress of Brazil Tours and Activities

National Congress of Brazil featuring street scenes, modern architecture and a city

Spend some time in the governmental heart of the capital, which showcases significant history, informative tours and awesome architecture.

In a city of sleek modern designs, it seems appropriate that the National Congress of Brazil building is one of the city’s most spectacular architectural feats. Enjoy a relaxing stroll around its scenic grounds, learn about the processes of Brazilian parliament and get a great photograph of the impressive building.

The National Congress of Brazil is one of Oscar Niemeyer’s many remarkable building designs for Brasília. It was completed in 1964. This structure is the legislative third of the Three Powers Plaza, with the other powers being executive and judiciary. Explore this architectural wonder where laws are made and abolished.

From the front, admire the sleek twin towers of the building that is fronted by two domes, one turned down and the other turned up. The towers hold parliamentary offices from where some of the most important figures in Brazilian government look out over the city.

The domes, however, signify where representatives of the 26 states of Brazil meet to discuss legislation. The dome turned down rides atop the building where the Senate hall is located, while the inverted dome is over the Chamber of Deputies. As you approach the building, notice how the design closely resembles a set of scales, a common symbol for justice and balance.

For an in-depth learning experience, take a free tour of the unusual buildings. Informative guides will tell you about the processes of government and the history of the location. Feel free to ask about the architecture, other buildings around Congress and current events and issues for the government.

After a visit, take advantage of other sites along the Monumental Axis. Experience the breathtaking interior of the Metropolitan Cathedral or continue the government theme with a tour of the Planalto or Itamaraty palaces.

In the evening walk around the back of the twin towers of the government and enjoy the sunset reflecting off a huge, shallow pool.

Admission and tours are free, with many languages available. Access the National Congress of Brazil in the government sector by car or bus.
