Experience an in-depth perspective on centuries of Polish culture as you explore this comprehensive collection of books, journals and other publications.

The National Library of Poland is the largest library in the country and one of Poland’s most important cultural institutions. The library contains a copy of every book published in post-war Poland as well as an extensive archive of publications about Poland published abroad. See some of the earliest manuscript records in the Polish language and check out one of the library’s fascinating exhibits and events.

The library was established in 1928, building upon the existing collection of the Załuski Library of the Commonwealth, which was founded in the 18th century. Many of the library’s most valuable holdings were lost or destroyed during World War II. Today the library is home to more than 2 million books, including more than 160,000 publications printed prior to the 19th century. Be sure to see the library’s 151 leaves of the Codex Suprasliensis, an 11th-century Cyrillic manuscript which is listed in the UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

Check out Krasiński Palace, also known as the Palace of the Commonwealth, which houses the Special Collections of the National Library. Originally constructed in the late 17th century, the building is a fine example of a typical Baroque residence. The palace was burned during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 and was carefully reconstructed after the war. Explore neighboring Krasiński Garden, which includes lovely 19th-century trees, as well as the remains of the original palace’s fence and gate.

The library hosts events and exhibitions throughout the year, so find out what is taking place during your visit. Exhibits often highlight particular themes from the library’s collection. Past exhibits have included a display of Chopin’s musical manuscripts, a showcase of Italian Renaissance cartography and a special festival dedicated to literature and music on St. John’s Night.

Reach both the main building of the National Library of Poland and Krasiński Palace by metro. The library is closed on Sundays and national holidays.
