Visit this monument to the Roman god of the sea, which is shrouded in local folklore and surrounded by architectural masterpieces.

Neptune’s Fountain (Fontanna Neptuna) is one of the most instantly recognizable landmarks of Gdańsk’s Old Town. It dominates Long Market, a section of the city’s Royal Route, where Polish monarchs once held triumphal ceremonies and parades. Come to this popular meeting point and tourist attraction to take a break, enjoy a bit of people-watching and admire the architectural beauty of the Old Town.

Erected in 1633, the fountain is the work of Abraham van den Blocke, a revered architect responsible for other city landmarks such as the Golden Gate. It features a trident-wielding statue of the Roman god Neptune perched on a pedestal. Water pours from the mouths of lion heads attached to the pedestal into a shell-shaped pool. Notice the collection of Rococo-style sea creatures that grace the pool. These were added in the mid-1700s.

The fountain symbolizes the strong connection between Gdańsk and the sea. Ask about the local mythology that explains how the Neptune statue participated in the invention of the Gdańsk herbal liqueur called Goldwasswer. Irritated by people tossing gold coins into his fountain, Neptune supposedly struck the water with his trident and subsequently shattered the coins. The remnants of the coins are now said to be the gold flakes present in the liqueur today.

Find the fountain in the heart of Long Market, the city’s historic marketplace and an attractive square. Look in all directions to appreciate the square’s colorful merchant houses and palaces, many of which previously hosted visiting royalty. Behind the fountain is the opulent Artus Court, inspired by the life of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Browse art and photography exhibits at Green Gate, a ceremonial gateway that marks the eastern entrance to Long Market.

Visit Neptune’s Fountain in the morning to avoid large crowds and in the evening to see it illuminated by soft lights. Framing the square are a collection of cafés with outdoor seating areas. Take a seat, watch as locals and tourists pass by and admire the beautiful cityscape.
