The hotel location is excellent overlooking the quayside just a short walk from everything, it is in need of modernisation though , the bar is also card payments only , the bar staff were not very attentive as we waited for a barrel to be changed but when it was it took them a while to forget about our drinks !!! There is a bit of noise from the train bridges we had a free parking pass which we had to input every 24 hours for some reason using the “special” tablet team and coffee making in this day and age need addressed the kettle takes an age to boil and the cups are small my advice would be get some tea, coffee and milk before you go as there is a handy fridge , cold drinks from reception are ridiculously overpriced £3 for a coke !!! Maybe we are being a bit nitpicky but a few tweaks will help it along

Our stay at the Copthorne was OK. The room was fine if not a little noisy being adjacent to the railway but seemed a bit tired, we had to use the bath has the thermostat on the shower was faulty and unfortunately the former was not very comfortable. Breakfast was OK and the staff were attentive and friendly. Parking was plentiful and easy. Location is good with access to restaurants & bars along the Quay. Overall we had a nice stay but the facilities feel a bit tired.

When this hotel was built it was a symbol of the regeneration of the Northeast. Obviously things age and the world changes. But this hotel is now a sad relic of the optimism of the early 90s. It is drab. Deserted. Reminiscent of a prison in its general feel. It is admittedly cheap so I guess when you stay there you sort of forgive all of this. But what is unforgivable is how uncomfortable the cheap beds are. I just want a good nights sleep. Stay at the premier inn.

Sun beat in through the window and no A/C. Only option for cooling was to crack the window, but we had to keep the heavy drapes closed to keep the sun from heating the room, limiting air circulation from the window.
