Learn about the story behind the Nobel Prize and the noble aspirations and deeds of those who have won the prize through the years.

The first Nobel Prize was awarded more than 110 years ago, inspired and funded by Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel. At the Nobel Museum, learn more of the fascinating story of who this philanthropist was, how he built his wealth and why he chose to bequeath it for the creation of international prizes. He invented dynamite and armament devices and later created the Nobel Prize to recognise not only scientists, but also those who foster international fraternity and peace.

More than 800 international recipients have been recognised with prizes. Look around at the portraits of Nobel Laureates, which regularly rotate in and out of the display areas. You may recognise scientist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who discovered X-rays or author Rudyard Kipling who created stories of lasting influence. Through multimedia exhibits you can experience Marie Curie’s lab and Nelson Mandela’s walk to freedom after his prison release.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions. A recent photographic study called Making the Peace featured images of people around the globe who further peacekeeping activities. Check the website to determine what exhibits will be in place during your visit.

Visit the restaurant for a sweet treat, Nobel Ice Cream, a dessert served at past prize banquets. Look under your chair for the autograph of one of the Nobel Prize winners. Pick up a copy of the museum’s trivia hunt to engage your kids in this fun way to learn about the museum’s exhibits. In 2001 the museum moved to its current location in Gamla Stan in Stockholm’s old Stock Exchange Building, a fitting location given the addition of the Nobel Prize for economics in 1968. From here it is a short walk to Storkyrkan and the Stockholm Royal Palace. While some street parking is available, it is expensive and fills quickly. Use public transport or walk from Central Station.

The Nobel Museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays in winter and every day in summer, except for public holidays. Admission is free on Tuesday evenings. Join a free guided tour in English any day or rent an audio guide. Check the website for additional information.
