Sacred Ground by Tiny Away

Summary:
Step into Sacred Ground, a tiny house New Zealand haven where adventure and serenity collide in the shadow of the mighty Mt Taranaki. Feel the energy of world-class surf breaks like Stent Road and Kumara Patch, just a drive away. Trek through beautiful landscapes, surf the legendary waves, or stoke the outdoor fire and lose yourself under a star-studded sky. This place is your ticket to reconnect with nature in a meaningful way.

The Space:
Sacred Ground, on the outskirts of rural Ōkato, is a tiny house retreat just 40 minutes from New Plymouth city. Enjoy breathtaking vistas of Mount Taranaki and the Pouakai Ranges, with cows often grazing in the foreground. This private spot offers easy access to nearby attractions. The lush Pukekura Park is a 40 minutes drive away, Pukeiti Gardens, the the Egmont National Park is 55 minute drive away, and the Dawson Falls is over an hours drive away. You can also meet exotic creatures at Pouakai Zoo and dive headfirst into the wild heart of New Zealand.

A comfortable, 139-square-foot accommodation is set in one of the best tiny house rentals and serene locations with abundant natural bushland, easy access to water, split air conditioning, a kitchenette, cooking equipment, and excellent bathroom facilities.

The bathroom, however, follows ecologically sustainable principles, including an eco-friendly cassette toilet with a removable waste holding tank, hand basin, and shower (gas heated for hot showers). It focuses on satisfying people's needs with natural resources and processes to save water by using eco-friendly toilets to save the environment.

If you plan to spend your tiny house New Zealand getaways here, we advise that you bring your basic necessities such as food and water during your stay with us. Thank you!

Guest Access:
Guests can access the tiny house and surrounding areas. You are welcome to the space around where the tiny home is placed.

The property has a Geodome where we usually host yoga, workshops and retreats on occasion. If you would like to check out the Geodome while you are here or use it to do yoga or relax, just send us a message and you are welcome to use that space as well.

The Neighborhood:
Sacred Ground is a tiny house retreat on the outskirts of Ōkato, just 25 minutes from New Plymouth. This cozy spot sits halfway between Auckland and Wellington on New Zealand’s rugged west coast. The Taranaki region's character is defined by its raw beauty and vibrant spirit. Here, a pristine coastline with world-class surf breaks meets the perfect volcanic scenery of Mount Taranaki. The landscape is alive with blooming gardens, endless trails, and a rich cultural heritage and arts scene. Taranaki has something for everyone

Our local recommendations:

- Pukekura Park is an inner-city botanical gem that features lakes with rowboats, playgrounds, a cricket ground, a fernery, a tea house, a waterfall, and the Bowl of Brooklands entertainment venue.
- Pukeiti is a 360-hectare rainforest park at Taranaki Maunga's base. It offers rainforest walking tracks through regenerating forests and stunning views of the Tasman Sea and nearby ranges.
- Egmont National Park is home to the 120,000-year-old Taranaki Maunga, New Zealand's most perfectly formed volcano, which last erupted in 1775. It's a sacred site for the Māori and a popular climbing destination.
- Dawson Falls is a 30-minute scenic drive from Stratford and offers great short walks on Mount Taranaki. The forest, with its moss-covered Tōtara and Kamahi trees, resembles a mystical Goblin Forest.
- Pouakai Zoo has been a Taranaki tradition for nearly four decades and invites visitors to share experiences with new generations. Memorable moments, like feeding geese and exploring the native bush, make it a cherished local heritage.
