What once protected Campeche from plundering pirates in the 17th century today provides awe-inspiring vantage points across the city.

Discover Campeche’s historic city limits when you visit the Old City Wall. Although built in the 16th century, the fortifications survive to this day. Discover the beautifully preserved ramparts, or baluartes, on a walking tour or return after dark for a dazzling light-and-sound show that recounts some of the city’s dramatic history.

Explore the Old City Wall by following the ramparts around the historic heart of Campeche. Known as the Ruta de los Baluartes (Bastions Route), this historic trail is a great way to orient yourself in the city. From the ocean-facing gateway of the Puerta del Mar to the inner-city gateway of the Puerta del Tierra, the Old City Wall provides a glimpse of how Campeche would have looked in centuries gone by. Admire the preserved architecture of the imposing Baluarte de San Juan or follow the curve of the Old City Wall to reach the 17th-century buildings at Baluarte de la Soledad. Here you’ll find a museum with a range of historic artifacts on display.

Go to Baluarte San Francisco for a sweeping view of the old town of Campeche. Continue on to Baluarte de Santiago, an impressive section of the wall that shelters a botanical garden called X’much-haltún.

The Puerta del Tierra is a meticulously conserved gateway. Return here in the evening to experience the light-and-sound show. Projected on the wall itself, the show depicts stories of pirates and age-old battles at sea. Climb up on top of the wall’s terrace and discover an awe-inspiring view across the city, which contrasts the twinkling lights of the city against the pitch-black expanse of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Old City Wall extends around Campeche’s old town. Many of the city’s historic attractions and museums can be found within these walls. Self-guided walking tours around the walls are free however, there is an admission fee for the light-and-sound show and terrace access. The light-and-sound show is presented in Spanish. Purchase tickets at Puerta del Tierra.
