Ornos Bay is home to one of the most idyllic beaches on Mykonos Island. With pristine sands and calm waters, this is the perfect family destination. Cafés and restaurants line the beachfront, so you won’t have to move far from your choice sunbathing spot. Some of the cafés even offer beach service. Sun loungers and umbrellas can be hired from the vendors along the beach.
Situated on the south-west corner of the island, Ornos Bay is nestled between two long headlands. This protects the waters from the swell and currents of the open sea, creating some of the safest swimming conditions on Mykonos. The shallow waters are perfect for young children to paddle in. The beach is also protected from the north-westerly winds, so you can relax in comfort.
Ornos Bay is also a hugely popular location for watersports. Try your hand at waterskiing or windsurfing, with a lesson from one of the licensed schools based here. Make sure you reserve your place well in advance, as the classes get booked up very quickly.
If you feel like venturing further afield, a number of operators run cruises from Ornos Bay to the neighbouring islands. You can also catch a boat to other beaches along the Mykonos coast. You’ll frequently see boats moored out in the bay, taking advantage of the sheltered conditions, sometimes even impressive luxury yachts.
After a day’s sun, sand and sea, head to one of the traditional Greek restaurants and tavernas for delicious fresh seafood and chilled local beer. The most popular brand is Mythos, a nod to the island’s history. As the evening draws in, take a seat on the terrace to watch the spectacular sunset over the Aegean Sea.
Ornos Bay is just 3 kilometres south of Mykonos Town. Free parking is available, but it is worth arriving early as spaces are limited. Alternatively, buses run from the town to the bay. The beach can be used free of charge.
