Hike or bike along trails that lead through thick spruce woodland, vast alpine meadows and rugged mountains in this gorgeous protected area.

Explore a vast range of terrain at Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park, a stunning nature preserve that embodies the charm of Northern Italy. Come in summer to hike through green meadows scattered with forests and creeks or in winter to ski or snowshoe over an unspoiled snow-covered landscape. Learn about the history of the Dolomites at the park’s four museums and watch for grazing deer. As you wander, encounter people at work, as many locals draw their livelihood from this landscape.

The park’s status as a protected area dates from 1967, but its area has been greatly extended over the years. It is now possible to spend days exploring its sprawling 73 square miles (190 square kilometers). Appreciate the astonishing vistas that open up as you wander through the Pale di San Martino Dolomite mountains, which are listed by UNESCO.

Discover the unique volcanic formations of the Lagorai Massif. Appreciate the serenity amid the sky-high spruce, larch, fir, pine and beech trees of the Paneveggio Forest, the enormous woodland area that gives the park its name. These beautiful surroundings demonstrate why the park holds the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, awarded in 2015.

Start your visit to the park at the Villa Welsperg, a historic house that is a former residence of nobles. The house is located in the beautiful Val Canali. Today it houses a tourist information center as well as a collection of exhibits about the local area. Exhibits cover subjects such as local geology and plant life. Stroll through the peaceful garden, with its ponds, rose garden and maze, before setting out to explore the wider, less manicured park itself.

Find Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park east of Trentino, about 2 hours by car from Trento, the district’s largest city. Pay a small fee to access the park. Guided tours are also available for a little extra. Check opening times before your visit, as they vary by season.
