Rushing water cascades over volcanic rock at this stunning natural site in Chile’s oldest national park.

Petrohué Falls, a waterfall in the river of the same name, is among the country’s most spectacular natural wonders. The water flows over basaltic lava while the Osorno Volcano stands behind it, providing excellent photo opportunities. Bring your camera to take photos of the falls tumbling over dark volcanic rock.

Hike through the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park to reach the falls. Upon arrival, listen to the loud rush of water racing over the rock edge. The water is usually clear with a blue hue, although at times it carries sand and stones from volcanic mudslides.

From the site of the falls, the imposing, symmetrical peak of the Osorno Volcano is clearly visible. Note its similarity to Japan’s famous Mount Fuji and ponder its destructive power.

Spot torrent ducks, resident breeders of the Andes, on the rocks or in the water. Get close to feel the spray of the waterfall on your face. For a more intense experience, go rafting or kayaking in the river.

The area around the falls makes a great setting for a picnic. As you eat, enjoy views of the white rapids flowing past black volcanic rock with green trees and the snowy volcano in the background.

Walking trails in the park lead through surrounding forests. Embark on a trek and inspect the range of coigüe, myrtle and cinnamon trees. Be on alert for deer and even pumas roaming among the trees.

Arrange to visit the waterfall as part of a guided excursion from Puerto Montt. Check with the tour operator to see if you need to bring cash as the tour fee may or may not include admission to the park.

Find Petrohué Falls near Todos los Santos Lake in the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. The park is a 43.5-mile (70-kilometre) drive northeast from Puerto Montt and just 34 miles (55 kilometres) east of Puerto Varas.
