Philipsburg Travel Guide

Built on a fortune made from silver, this Victorian-era mining town has magnificently restored period buildings, mountain views and pretty lakes.

Stroll down Philipsburg’s main street and you’ll quickly be transported to the prosperous times of the region’s silver-mining boom. Admire period shop frontages and grand residential buildings standing against a backdrop of the Pintler and Flint Creek mountain ranges. The geologically rich mountains and lakes around Philipsburg are famed for their Montana sapphires. Hunt for gems and minerals hidden in the scenic hillsides, ski on powder-dusted mountains or go boating at beautiful Georgetown Lake.

Wander around the town’s pretty streets and check out the local shops and artisans. Kids will adore Philipsburg’s traditional candy store, as well as keeping their eyes peeled for sapphires and other gems at the rockhounding centers. Be sure to check out the Granite County Museum to see a recreated 1900s silver mineshaft. Visit the Opera House Theater to see summer performances or vaudeville shows in one of Montana’s oldest theaters. Winninghoff Park has an ice rink that is used for hockey matches in winter and open-air concerts in summer.

During the snow season, you can make the short trip up the Jubilee and Rumsey mountains to explore the groomed slopes of the Discovery Ski Area. This fun-filled ski resort is perfect for families and transforms into an exciting mountain-biking destination during the summer. The Granite Ghost Town State Park is a fascinating spot to learn about the region’s silver-mining heritage. This deserted camp was once one of the richest silver mines in the world, but it quickly shut down after the silver panic of 1893.

Get to know Philipsburg’s magnificent surroundings and keep an eye out for glittering minerals. Visit Gem Mountain or check out some of the region’s 75 lakes and reservoirs. Georgetown Lake is a beautiful spot to go boating, fishing, camping or windsurfing. If you have no luck hooking a salmon or trout, you can dine at one of the lakeside restaurants.

Philipsburg is located in Granite County in southwest Montana. Fly into the airport in Missoula, approximately a 75-minute drive away. Alternatively, make Philipsburg a stop on your trip along the Pintler Scenic Highway or your road trip between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park.
