Viareggio’s Pineta (Pine Forest) di Ponente distinguishes it from other typical Italian resort towns. The woods provide a tranquil and scenic contrast to the city’s vibrant promenade full of crowds at shops and restaurants. Relish the fresh air and natural setting among the Mediterranean pines in the forest.
There are two main parts of the forest split by a dividing line that runs from north to south. The busier section of the two is the Western Forest, as it is nearer to the town. The small part is easily accessible and ideal for a picnic or short break. Cycle, walk or rent a carriage pulled by ponies for your enchanting trip in this natural environment. You will find tennis courts, golf courses and a lake with swans.
The Eastern Forest provides a contrast in that it is vaster and more diverse. Drive or cycle around the outer layer of the park. Here, there are many cafés, bars and restaurants alongside playgrounds so all the family can enjoy. See the Villa Borbone, a historic three-storey palace in the middle of the forest. Attend one of the temporary exhibits or cultural programs in the structure’s picturesque garden.
The entire area is an ideal spot for children due to the many activities on offer. Take the kids to the merry-go-round and the miniature train. Play mini-golf and cycle through the pine trees. Stop for snacks and drinks at one of the vending stalls in the forest. Bring some Italian ingredients and make your own picnic in the shade of a tree. As you move towards the heart of the Eastern Forest, you will encounter fewer structures and more natural features.
The town of Viareggio is 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) from the Pineta di Ponente and is easy to access by car, bus or bike. You can also walk there straight from the beach.
