In southwestern Puerto Rico lies a picture-perfect beach that is sheltered in a natural cove and untouched by human development.

Playa Sucia translates to “dirty beach” but the name is entirely misleading. This secluded cove beach, also known as La Playuela, is one of the most pristine and beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico. Make the journey down to the southwestern tip of the island to find this classically Caribbean destination, where aquamarine waters roll gently across a curve of fine white sand.

Drive to the south end of the Morrillos Peninsula, climb the 19th-century Cabo Rojo lighthouse and look down from the tower for your first views of Playa Sucia. From here, descend to the shoreline of the cove and enjoy how the area has remained totally undeveloped. The beach is located at the southern tip of the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge, which means that it has been protected from hotel development and beachfront cafés.

Take photos of the stunning natural surroundings. The land arches around the crescent of sand, surrounding the beach with green hills. You can still see the tower of the lighthouse watching over the bay.

Splash about in the brilliant blue waters of the cove. Shallow areas around the edges are ideal for younger visitors to Playa Sucia. Stay near the shore when enjoying a refreshing dip, as the deeper sections sometimes have a strong undertow.

Explore the surrounding area by using the walking trails around the Morrillos Peninsula. The dramatic limestone cliffs here create some of the most breathtaking coastal views in Puerto Rico. Look for the much-photographed Natural Bridge, a striking archway standing in the sea.

Follow a dirt track to the south end of the peninsula and park near the lighthouse for access to the cove. The beach is about 40 minutes away from downtown Cabo Rojo by car.

Playa Sucia is free to visit. The lack of development means that you need to bring your own food and drink for a daytrip here. Come from Monday to Friday to avoid crowd limitation measures that are sometimes enforced at the beach.
