Enjoy some outdoor recreation at the Plaza de los Palos Grandes, a large public square that hosts yoga sessions, dance classes, open-air movies and concerts. This is where many locals and visitors come to keep fit and be entertained. The plaza was inaugurated by the city’s mayor in 2010 and its name translates as “Large Sticks Square.”
Take a short walk around the attractive plaza and try the near-impossible feat of walking through the interactive fountain without getting splashed by the jets of water. See if you can join in with one of the fitness classes or copy the exercises from where you are standing. Some of the sessions take place at night. If this all sounds like too much activity for you, watch the proceedings from the small stand of steps.
During your visit, you may see a musical group or singer perform a concert under the glass canopy. There are also movie showings from time to time. Enjoy the lively atmosphere as the square fills up with hundreds of people who are out for an evening stroll or waiting for some nighttime entertainment.
Stop for a coffee at the plaza’s small café. Among the plaza’s other amenities are a library with computer room and toys for children to play with.
There are several well-kept patches of grass on which you can relax and enjoy the sunshine. Sit among friends and unwind with a picnic. You can also make use of the square seating areas that appear to float midair.
Plaza de los Palos Grandes is situated in the Metropolitan District, about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) east of Caracas city center. It is just to the north of the affluent Altamira district where there are many tourist attractions, such as the Caracas Transport Museum and East Park. Take the metro to either Altamira or Miranda and walk a few blocks to the north. For those who wish to drive, the plaza has its own metered underground parking lot.
