This pretty beach is an ideal place for a relaxing stroll along the coast. It’s also the perfect starting point for diving excursions.

Ponta do Sol Beach is a pleasant pebble beach surrounded by rugged cliffs and lined with charming cafés. Known for being one of the sunniest places in Madeira, the beach is a wonderful spot to relax and bask in the warm sun and go for a dip in the calm coastal waters.

Tucked away in a little cove, the beach’s grey pebbles stretch for 525 feet (160 meters) along the coast. The Atlantic Ocean moderates the climate in Ponta do Sol, creating constant spring-like weather throughout the year. Dive off the platforms above the beach’s emerald waters, or simply lie on a sun lounger and listen to the crash of the waves.

Join a game of volleyball on the beach’s court or walk along the peaceful waterfront promenade, which runs from one end of Ponta do Sol village to the other. Bordered by palm trees, the promenade offers lovely views over the bay. Look for the 19th-century jetty, which served as the town’s only connection to the rest of the world until the mid-20th century.

Cool off with a drink at one of the bars or restaurants found nearby the beach. Linger in the late afternoon to watch a spectacular sunset.

Sign up for an excursion with a local diving school. The most popular trip explores the wreck of the Bowbelle, a dredging ship that operated on London’s River Thames before infamously colliding with a cruise ship in 1989. After being sold to a company in Madeira, the ill-fated ship sank off the coast of Ponta do Sol, where divers can see it today.

Take trips to nearby beaches such as Madalena do Mar and Lugar de Baixo. Madalena do Mar offers more excellent spots for swimming, while Lugar de Baixo’s waves make it a popular destination for experienced surfers.

Ponta do Sol Beach is located in southern Madeira in the town of Ponta do Sol. Parking is available by the beach.
