Bordered by hilly tropical vegetation, Pontal Beach is a gorgeous stretch of sand just a short walk north from the historic center of Paraty. Its shallow slope offers a welcoming way into the warm and clear water of Carioca Bay. Enjoy a seafood specialty at one of the beach cafés or restaurants here and relax as you watch people go by on the sand.
Rent a deck chair to sunbathe and work on your tan. Cool down on a hot afternoon with a dip in the water and remember to bring snorkeling gear so you can see the fish nibbling at your ankles. Among the greatest highlights here is the stunning vista of the islands and headland across the water. Stay until dusk to watch the majestic sunset taking hold over the jumble of peaks and troughs on the horizon.
Rent watersports equipment from tour operators on the beach and do stand-up paddleboarding on the water. You can also chat with boat owners and negotiate a sightseeing or diving trip around the nearby islands. In the evening, enjoy the lively ambiance and music at one of the bars flanking the strand. Try the shrimp skewers and coconut milk.
Notice the great difference between the tides, as the water gradually swallows the sandy shore at high tide. Stroll along the shore with your kids and beachcomb for marine treasures, such as shells and rocks. The picturesque Forte and Jabaquara beaches are located to the north of this strand.
It is free to visit Pontal Beach, which remains open to the public all the time. Do keep in mind that it can get fairly busy on weekend afternoons. Find the beach a little to the north of the river that runs close to the historic center of Paraty. The beach is located on a promontory that protrudes into sparkling Carioca Bay. Visit some of the other nearby highlights too, such as the Defensor Perpétuo Fort Museum, the Church of Our Lady of the Remedies and Forte Beach.
