Enjoy some of the city’s best bars and restaurants beside this traditional English pier.

Spend a day at the beach or an evening among Fortaleza’s busiest strip of bars, cafés and restaurants when you visit lively Ponte dos Ingleses. Watch the sun go down over the water with a drink at a buzzing bar and stroll down the street in search of a place to enjoy a traditional Brazilian barbecue. Dance the night away with locals at one of the clubs and enjoy your morning coffee beside the beach.

The British architects who designed Ponte dos Ingleses modelled it on Brighton Pier and gave it the name that translates to “English Bridge.” Construction on the pier began in 1902 and was completed 4 years later. The pier was originally used as a stopping point for passenger and cargo ferries, but this ceased in 1940. Today, it is one of Fortaleza’s liveliest social hotspots, with stylish cafés, bars and restaurants open day and night.

Spend your morning swimming or sunbathing at the town beach. Enjoy a healthy salad and a fresh fruit juice at one of the cafés overlooking the water. Stroll along the pier as the sun goes down in the evening and stop at a bar for a cold beer or cocktail. Check out the menus of the many restaurants along the pier and try freshly caught fish, traditional Brazilian barbecue or international food such as sushi and pizza.

If you’re looking to party, you’ll find several clubs that stay open until the early hours. Choose between live music venues, colourful Brazilian clubs and relaxed bars. If you end up dancing until morning, you can grab a strong Brazilian coffee and churros with chocolate before heading home.

Ponte dos Ingleses is located at Praia de Iracema, the closest beach to the centre of Fortaleza. Several bus routes run between Fortaleza’s beaches and the town centre. Taxis are a readily available and well-priced transport option for the evening.
