Hikers Haven At Lake Sutherland - Great exploring the North Olympic Peninsula

A rustic retreat with modern amenities offering great lake views, kayaking a great fishing hole right in front of the private dock.

Situated on the north shore of Lake Sutherland, this property is a great "home base" for those exploring the North Olympic Peninsula, hiking the Elwah Valley or just looking to enjoy swimming, kayaking and fishing on beautiful Lake Sutherland. Nestled in the Olympic Mountains. Easy drive to Ocean Beaches and other points of interest like Salt Creek for low tide pool viewings, Makah Museum is a must see, Cape Flattery most NW point in the continental US, Ozette trail is a wonderful hike starting at Lake Ozette and to the Ocean then back up to Lake Ozette (9 miles). Also two entries to the Olympic National Park are near by, Sol duc Hot Springs and Hoh Rain Forest. Lake Cresent is a beautiful lake with an historic lodge for dining and a fun gift shop.

This old lake cabin has been recently renovated - updating the kitchen, bathroom and main living area. The upstairs bedroom has a queen-size bed and picture windows presenting a beautiful, wide view of the lake. Wake up in this spacious loft-like bedroom and the serenity of the lake before you. There is a flat screen smart TV in the bedroom, with a DVD player.  You can enjoy your favorite movies by logging into your Netflix, Hulu or other online TV account, or by bringing your favorite DVD movies.  There are a few DVDs at the cabin for your selection, too.

Downstairs on the main floor, there is also a double-size sleeper sofa set up as a permanent bed, with privacy draping, to accommodate guests for sleeping. The main floor living space is open-concept. The kitchen is updated with beautiful counters and an built-in electric stove top. There is a toaster oven and microwave, but no other baking oven. There is a drip coffee make and tea kettle for your favorite hot beverages.  We provide dishes, pots, pans, cups, glasses, serving dishes and utensils.  Please be careful about putting anything on the shelf above the glass topped stove! Bed linens, towels, soap, shampoo and some cleaning supplies are also provided.

The lake side of the room is banked by windows so that you always have a view of the lake.  There is a large evergreen just to the left of the view.  It is a favorite roost of one of the resident eagles at Lake Sutherland.  The dining table sits in front of these windows for dining with a view.  There is a love seat, adjacent to the dining space, creating a wonderful place relax and enjoy a good book or just stare out onto the lake.  Please note that there are caution signs on the deck railing, please no climbing or leaning on railing.

The trails to the house and down to the dock at the lake are clear, but steep.  Some agility is required.  On the dock there are 3 kayaks for guest use.  Paddles and life vests are in the boat house.  The paddle boat on the right side of the dock is NOT functional.  Please don`t try to use it.  Also the right side of the dock is for boat storage only ---safe, but not super stable for hanging out on.  The left side of the dock can be used for hanging out and fishing.  The dock sits right in front of a deep fishing hole. Wanting a fishing get away?  Lake Sutherland is a great place to catch Kokanee (land-locked salmon). No live bait is allowed for fishing on Lake Sutherland, so bring your power bait or "wedding bells", "cowbells" or "spoons". Please be advised: All water activities are at your own risk.

The house is exactly as advertised and the view is amazing. It's a great spot to explore Olympic National Park but you might not want to leave. The kayaks and lakeside dock are a major plus. Would definitely stay again.

We have stayed at Hikers Haven a couple of times and it is a very comfortable cabin. The views are stunning and it is reasonably priced. We enjoyed our time there even though the weather was wet. It is such a relaxing serene setting!

Good, Not Great
Overall we had an enjoyable 6 night stay in this home. I’m listing the pros and cons which I hope is helpful to others in deciding on if this is the rental for them. There are some simple fixes that could make this house go from good to great. ✅ Pros Easy, responsive communication with Sequim rental company. Views are wonderful. Location is good for accessing Olympic Nat. Park. The Kayak shed/dock was a big perk. Exceptional hot water for shower. ‼️ CONS There is a lot of junk piled up outside the house which is off-putting upon arrival. The firewood wall is a disaster waiting to happen. The grill is old, tiny and dirty. Seems a shame to not have a decent grill on such a nice deck. There is no functional storage for longer stays. No hangers are provided in the upstairs closet space and all the dressers are full of the owners belongings so there is nowhere to put your clothes. The dressers smell awful inside so even if emptied they would make your clothes smell like a thrift shop. Couch is old, scratchy and a waste of living room space. An L-shaped sectional would be so much more open, inviting and functional. The wall and shelving decor overall was random, outdated, in-cohesive and over-crowded. Not a very cozy feel. There are no chairs to sit in on the dock and the lights outside the dock also did not work. The lanterns up and down the climb to the driveway and/or doc could be much brighter to ensure good footing.

Hikers Haven
Overall the property was ok. On the lake, new dock. The linen could've been lighter for summer and smell fresh. It would've been nice to use the A/C. The chairs on the deck were old and weathered. (Canvas split on one chair) Bbq (Grill) was nasty. Not clean and in poor condition. Pots and pans were rough. I ended up getting one for me to use. I'd have them invest in a property manager.

Quirky, cute and very fun
We really enjoyed our stay. Enjoyed the platform by the water, great for a refreshing swim. Enjoyed the kayaks there ("at-your-own-risk"). Enjoyed the AC in the hot days. Enjoyed watching all the boats, jet-skis and others going about the lake having their fun. Enjoyed watching some stars at night. The house is quirky. Like the drawer that doesn't fully open because of the towel holder that was added, or the random electronic gadgets lying around that we had no clue what they were for. The sofa-bed with the DIY privacy curtain. The tiny toilet and humongous kitchen sink. The toaster oven that was just enough for our needs. The internet which was slow (not a WiFi issue) and often timing out connections, so you have to retry a couple of times. I managed to do some work during the off-hours, but it took some patience. The water features were a bit misrepresented in the photos: the kayaks were in the boathouse, with no instructions on how to properly get them out. The pedal boat was stuck on the side of the boathouse and impossible to get out. The platform was in a worse state of disrepair, with parts of it a bit scary to walk on. I really hope they'll do something about all this, as it's all a great perk to have. The stairs up and down from the house were definitely nothing to take lightly. They felt like hiking indeed. But our 7- and 9-year-old boys had no trouble there. The bedroom upstairs gets none of the AC cooling, and its windows had no bug screens, so the only way to get some reprieve from the heat was a couple of fans. So not everything perfect. But there were clear signs of recent improvements and fixes, so I hope they continue the work to refresh and fix or redo all the things that need it. Please, take all of the above as one snapshot in time. Overall, we really did enjoy it a lot and really hope to go back to this cabin someday. It was absolutely worth it!

Lakeside Bliss
My husband and I came here for our honeymoon. Read reviews about the steps, and all I have to say is: this cabin is called "Hikers Haven" and the steps set the expectation. I do not recommend navigating the steps severely intoxicated or if you have weak ankles, but in all other instances- they are fine. We arrived right at the start of a painfully gross heat wave and despite all expectations to the contrary, this little cabin was a refuge from the heat. We went down to the water, laid on the dock, and jumped in the lake. The water was warm but incredibly refreshing. There were fun little noodles and lounge chairs (straight up 80's style)-we had a blast in the water. I don't remember if anyone else talked about the kitchen, but it was great. There was only a toaster oven, which we used, and a *tiny* two-man ,one-cup coffee pot. Everything else that you could possibly want or need was provided in the kitchen, so meals were pretty easy. In my view, this was a five star spot to stay. It reminded me of camp when I was a kid-has all of the essentials, is comfortable, beautiful, and scenic beyond belief. Everything was clean and orderly (damn near immaculate) when we arrived, but there was a slight aged odor and a faint smell of cigarette smoke in the loft. We did use Netflix to watch Tv at night, but the internet is not great in that area and there was a lot of lag. If there is any idea of having a "working vacation" this is not a viable place for that. Waking up every morning to the sight of tree branches above, a lake of glass, a local eagle, and multitudes of butterflies flitting (dancing?) above the deck, the stairs, the shed and the dock created a feeling of pure tranquility. We haven't been that happy or relaxed in a long, long time. Five stars. Absolute bliss. Completely serene.

Amazing place for our family. Gorgeous views, private, and cozy. Everything was wonderful about our stay. I would not recommend for families with small children. Our 9 year old was fine with the steep stairs, but I would be very nervous for anyone under 5. Great spot near lots of Olympic National Parks attractions. My one tip would be to stop in Port Angeles for groceries on the way in. You won't want to leave the view once you arrive!

We loved this cute little cabin! Great for a couple or small family. It’s a bit of a hike down the stairs to the dock but we didn’t mind, loved using the kayaks and fishing off the dock! I would recommend older children due to proximity to water/steep incline. Property manager was very responsive and helpful!

We really had a good time, the heavy rains and river flooding/high tides didn’t stop us from having fun. I really enjoy winter fishing all the rivers in forks (less then 1 hour from the cabin) with the rivers blown out we did a beach fire/pic nic on 3rd beach, used the cabin kayaks on Sutherland, and played a lot of card games with a great view of the lake!

Great Location, Nice Place,
The house was better than I expected. It was very clean. The view of the lake was excellent. And, we used the provided kayaks a number of times. The only downsides were the stairs. They were a difficult to navigate after a long day of hiking. And, the kitchen could use a few more cooking utensils and a larger non-stick pan. We wanted to make pancakes and couldn't find a large enough pan or spatula.

Treacherous Beauty
The setting above the beautiful emerald green lake Sutherland is an A+. The cabin is clean and adequate. Access to the cabin and particularly to the boathouse is an F- The very steep paths to both are horribly out of repair and the bushes around them are extremely overgrown...very dangerous. The last straw was having no access to water from any of the faucets. Obviously we did not complete our booking and had to find alternative accommodations. The property mangers were very helpful. Property mangers deserve an A.
