Visit the Postage Stamp Museum (Postmuseum des Fürstentums Liechtenstein), a celebration of Liechtenstein’s postal service. Founded in 1936, it has exhibitions of antique equipment, artwork and stamps. The Postage Stamp Museum is a must-see attraction for all those interested in philately and the royal history of the Principality of Liechtenstein. It forms part of the Liechtenstein National Museum, a group of cultural institutions.
The main attraction is its exhibition of stamp issues that date back to 1912, including a private collection donated by the museum founder. The museum has dozens of pullout racks decorated with original stamps, their templates and proofs by stamp artists. Many examples feature the faces of members of the Princely House of Liechtenstein. Others depict scenes from typical agricultural and industrial activities, national landmarks and sporting events.
Complementing the stamp exhibit are cabinets stocked with traditional postal apparatus. See a retro adding machine, models of mail delivery carts and vintage weighing scales. Find mailboxes and bicycles used by mail workers, along with horns and lanterns. There is also a series of photos portraying the postal route taken from Lake Constance to Milan between 1445 and 1826.
Complete your trip by purchasing postcards and stamps to send home or keep as souvenirs. Choose between replicas of historic stamp issues, photos of the royal family and images of Liechtenstein’s beautiful landscapes and put the card in the mail from this special location.
The museum is open daily, except for select public holidays, and admission is free. At the tourist information office in the adjacent Liechtenstein Center, get a souvenir passport-type stamp to document your visit to the country.
Located on Städtle street, the Postage Stamp Museum sits in the heart of Vaduz’s town center. Visit Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, the Liechtenstein National Museum and other nearby attractions. Vaduz Castle is a 20-minute walk uphill. Although the castle isn’t open to the public, the walk provides excellent views of the Vaduz countryside.
