See some of Aveiro’s most striking municipal buildings, including the city hall and the Misericórdia Church, at this small but lively city square.

The tree-lined Praça da Republica is at the heart of city life in Aveiro. It’s likely you’ll pass through it at some point during your visit to the city. With so much to see, it’s best to stay and view the imposing City Hall, inspect the tiled façade of the Misericórdia Church and find a spot on a bench to sit back and people-watch.

As you approach Praça da Republica, note the square’s unusual eye-catching design. The ground is covered in a mosaic of small tiles with a design featuring various differently sized circles. At the center of the square stands a monument honoring José Estêvão Coelho de Magalhãe, more commonly known as José Estêvão, an influential 19th-century journalist and politician.

Turn to the south side of the square to face the City Hall, a grand-looking building housing the offices of city officials. On the east edge of the square is Misericórdia Church, one of the most well-known and eye-catching religious monuments in the city. Though based on plans created by an Italian architect in 1585, the church was not built until 1653 under the direction of Portuguese architect Manuel Azenha. Take time to properly examine the center of the façade, which is covered in beautiful 19th-century azulejos (hand-painted tiles). Venture inside the church to see even more of these intricate tiles, some of which date as far back as the 16th century.

Relax for a while on this square and watch the world go by. Find one of the benches around the square’s perimeters. Because of its central position, the square hosts numerous impromptu soccer games.

Take a guided tour of the city to find out more about the square and the buildings that surround it. Many guided walking tours will include a stop here. Praça da Republica is just a short stroll away from the Forum Aveiro shopping mall.
