Carneiros Beach is a scenic stretch of sand at the point where a small river meets the ocean. It is known for its rustic charm, with a rickety wooden bridge and a quaint church overlooking the water. Climb aboard a catamaran and watch live music performances in this lively area.
Capture photos of the Church of St. Benedict, a rare religious structure on a beach. Admire its charming whitewashed colonial façade, with accents of green. Notice the cross marking the central section of its roof. Climb the small steps to reach the portal and inspect the interior of the structure. Behind the church are rows of tall palm trees that remind you of the tropical location.
Go on a catamaran ride on the ocean and look back towards the beach and the church, a scene for great photographs. Ride through the mangroves and bathe in the clay mud. The water is warm and clear, with intriguing rock formations rising above the surface at certain points. Walk out a fair distance with the placid water gradually reaching your waist. Rent deck chairs and sunbathe before a cool dip in the ocean.
Dine on seafood at one of the restaurants backing onto the beach. Relax in the shade of an umbrella and admire the views of the ocean, as you enjoy your meal on the sand.
Note that the site’s name is Portuguese for Beach of Sheep. Embark on a boat trip to the tiny idyllic island of Santo Aleixo.
Carneiros Beach is 8 kilometres (5 miles) north along the coast from Tamandaré in the state of Pernambuco. Take a taxi or drive the scenic journey to get there in around 15 minutes. Visit the nearby Porto de Galinhas, which is a little further to the north and is known for its natural pools.
