Punta del Diablo is a laidback beach town that offers respite from the urban rush. Located on Uruguay's northeast coast, this town was born as a sleepy fishing port. Visit today to find a community that still relishes relaxation, spending time on the beach, surfing waves and savouring fine seafood meals.
Get around Punta del Diablo easily on foot. Its sand roads connect the village to the various beaches. Lay out a towel on Playa del Rivero, a shoreline that draws visitors with a protective bay, beach bars and a memorable sun set panorama. Younger crowds frequent Playa de la Viuda, a breathtaking beach with powerful waves.
Explore the rocks at Playa de los Botes and spot colourful fishing boats trekking home with the day's load. Nearby, buy handmade trinkets and clothing at an artisanal market. Rent surfboards from beachfront stores. Many such stores also offer surfing lessons for beginners. Swim with peace of mind: lifeguards patrol all village beaches throughout the day.
Get amongst nature on the walking trails of Santa Teresa National Park. Admire peaceful orchards, explore empty coves and enjoy incredible views from its boardwalk lookouts. Climb to Fortaleza de Santa Teresa, a stronghold built atop a coastal hill in the 1700s. Stay a while at a scenic picnic area or stay the night at a camping ground. Observe the area's fascinating ecosystem on a four-wheel-drive or boat tour at Estación Biológica Potrerillo de Santa Teresa. This biological reserve on the edge of a lagoon is home to otters, birds and the capybara, the world’s largest rodent.
As evening falls, head to the village beachfront for live music shows at bars and a seafood dinner sourced from the day's catch. The village has only one ATM so bring enough cash.
Punta del Diablo is at its most popular from Christmas to February. Even then, however, the stretching beaches and expansive nature reserves don't seem overcrowded or rushed.
