Imagine you have been transported back in time as you explore this spectacular 11th-century castle, a neo-Gothic masterpiece that seems straight from a story.

Burg Reichenstein, or Reichenstein Castle, is a dramatic sight even from a distance, perched on the rock edge of a hill above the Rhine and surrounded by lush green forest. Step through its ancient doorway and you will be even more impressed by the deep sense of history that permeates this ancient building. Build up an idea of what life would have been like here centuries ago as you view the many fascinating exhibits on display in the museum contained within the castle.

Try to spot the oldest sections of the castle as you are walking around. These are thought to date back as far as the early 11th century. However, much of the current building was constructed after 1834, when the castle underwent major restoration work ordered by its owner General Baron Franz Wilhelm von Barfuß.

Give yourself plenty of time to explore the interior of the vast castle, which is filled with intriguing items. See portraits of the former residents, the Kirsch-Puricelli Barons, who acquired the castle in 1899. Imagine the lives they led in these opulent rooms. Visit the library, the music room and many other spaces filled with authentic Ludwig XV-era furniture. Learn about the many different hands the castle passed through before it came to the Kirsch-Puricellis. The castle was once owned by the church, by knights and even by a contingent of outlaw robber barons.

A highlight of any visit to Reichenstein Castle is a walk along the battlements. Bring a camera with you and prepare to take lots of photos of the incredible vista of the Rhine that spreads out in the valley below. The outdoor seating area of the castle’s on-site Restaurant Puricelli also offers wonderful views.

Visit Reichenstein Castle any day of the week except for Monday, when it is closed. Keep in mind that there is a small entry fee if you wish to go inside. To reach the castle, walk south from Trechtingshausen railway station for just over 10 minutes, following the Rhine and taking in the beautiful river views along the way.
